Wedding fever has hit the UK and the world's eyes are on the British Royal Family. Bets are on as to what wedding dress Catherine Middleton will be wearing, and there's an awful lot of talk as to what lingerie she will be wearing, too - although we're unlikely to ever find out which brand she'll be wearing under her dress.

History of the Wedding Dress

The history behind the wedding dress had more to do with a reflection on the family's status and wealth - traditionally it would have been in rich, opulent colours with layers of material and fur. Marriages were about more than two people wanting to spend the rest of their lives together; they were the joining of two families, tribes or even countries. Philippa of England was the first documented princess to wear white in 1406. However, the white dress did not become the norm until after 1840 when the then Queen Victoria married in white (the only reason was she had been given some lace in white which she wanted the dress to match).

Colours

The colour cream was becoming popular before Queen Victoria chose it, but her regal approval cemented its place in the fashions of the time. Future queens since have all worn cream, although there's a plethora of choice when it comes to hues of whites and creams. Traditionally the colour blue signifies purity and in Eastern cultures the colour red was worn for luck. It's a unique idea to incorporate these colours into your bridal lingerie -- whether a ribbon or trimming in red or blue it's a nice accent to tradition.

Fantasy Bridal Lingerie

Nothing says 'bridal' more than pearls, French lace and Italian silks and with 2011 being the year where wedding fever has reached fever pitch, we should all indulge in some luxury lingerie. Some lingerie is made to be seen, some made to be worn, but no lingerie is made to sit in your lingerie drawer. So buy it, love it and wear it! Indulge in girlie petticoats, lighter than air fabrics, rich colours and delicate detailing. Imagine a long line bra or corset in silk, layered with French antique lace and outlined with pearls.

Fashion

Wedding dresses have evolved over the years - fashion and celebrity have led these trends and millions of brides have followed suit. There has been a resurgence of vintage dresses in recent years and wearing a family heirloom can help save money, too. Princess Diana's dress in the 80s opened the floodgates to huge bows, billowing sleeves and lace embellishments with a long train which suited the times. Dresses haven't been as big - or indeed quite the same - since.

Best regards !
